On 15 March 1921, army aviator Giorgio Parodi and his friend, aircraft technician Carlo Guzzi, established the “Moto Guzzi stock company” in Genoa with the financial support of Giorgo’s father, Emanuele Vittorio Parodi. Its factory was in the small Italian town of Mandello del Lario. After enjoying rapid growth, Moto Guzzi was Italy’s largest motorcycle producer in the middle of the 1930s. Until the end of the 80s, its product range included mopeds (Guzzino), motor scooters (Galetto), small motorcycles (Cardellino), trikes (Ercole, Mulo) and motorbikes with engine capacities between 125 and 1000 cm³. The company has been part of the Piaggio company group since 2004 and is directed by Roberto Colannino. Moto Guzzi motorbikes have always been extremely popular on the international scene, as their visual appearance so clearly sets them apart from other market competitors. The technical foundation for today’s models was actually laid way back at the end of the 1950s, when the now “redundant” racing department developed the transversely mounted 90° V-shaped two-cylinder engines featuring a longitudinal crankshaft. In the mid-1960s this engine concept was revived for Italian official motorbike tender, adapted to the requirements and combined with a cardan drive. Ever since then, Moto Guzzi motorcycles’ classic feature has been the V-shaped cylinder heads that protrude from the side of the bike profile.
